How Many Football Fields Fit in a Hectare?
One hectare holds 1.4 FIFA-standard football pitches of 105 m × 68 m, or 1.87 American football fields measured with the end zones included. The difference comes down to code: a full-size association football pitch covers 7,140 square metres, while an American football field covers about 5,351. A hectare is 10,000 square metres.
1.4 or 1.87 — and the gap between those two figures is why the comparison needs handling with care. Which one applies depends on whether you mean the game played with a round ball or the one played with an oval one. The pitch has meanwhile become the default unit for describing land in news reports, which is unfortunate, because there is no such thing as a standard football pitch: codes differ, association football permits a wide legal range even within its own rules, and a reference that elastic is not really a unit at all.
How many football fields fit in a hectare?
Every figure below comes from the same division: 10,000 square metres divided by the area of the field. Where a code permits a range of sizes, the standard or the maximum is used, and the dimensions are stated alongside so the arithmetic can be checked rather than taken on trust.

Two rows there are worth pausing on. A maximum-size rugby union field, in-goal areas included, comes to 10,080 square metres — within one per cent of a hectare, and the closest thing to a naturally hectare-sized pitch in any sport. A full-size Gaelic football pitch, meanwhile, is larger than a hectare outright.
Association football: 1.4 pitches to a hectare
FIFA specifies 105 metres by 68 metres for pitches used in professional competition. That is 7,140 square metres, or 0.714 hectares. Divide 10,000 by 7,140 and you get 1.4006, so one hectare is 1.4 pitches — near enough that the rounding never matters in practice.
The complication is that the Laws of the Game do not require those dimensions. A domestic pitch may be anywhere from 90 to 120 metres long and 45 to 90 metres wide. International fixtures narrow the range considerably, to between 100 and 110 metres long and 64 to 75 metres wide.

So the honest answer is that a football pitch spans anything from 0.4 to 1.08 hectares depending on the ground. When a report says an area is "the size of five football pitches", it almost always means the 105 by 68 standard, which puts five pitches at 3.57 hectares.
American football: 1.87 fields to a hectare
An American football field is fixed rather than variable, which makes it the more reliable comparison of the two. It measures 360 feet by 160 feet including both end zones — 120 yards by 53⅓ yards — giving 57,600 square feet, or 5,351 square metres. That is 0.535 hectares, so a hectare holds 1.87 fields.
In acres the same field is 1.32, a figure quoted often enough in US property contexts to be worth remembering. Strip out the two ten-yard end zones and the 100-yard playing area alone is 48,000 square feet, 4,459 square metres, or 1.10 acres. That is the origin of the loose claim that a football field is about an acre: it is close, provided you ignore the end zones.
The American field is smaller than the FIFA pitch mainly because it is much narrower — 48.8 metres against 68. The lengths are closer than most people assume, at 109.7 metres against 105.
Both codes carry the same caveat: these figures describe the marked field, not the ground it sits on. Run-off margins, technical areas and perimeter fencing add somewhere between 10 and 20 per cent, so any stadium encloses meaningfully more land than its pitch dimensions imply.
The other football codes
Beyond the two main answers, the rest of the football family spreads across a surprising range, and several of its pitches are larger than a hectare on their own.
Rugby union is the closest fit of any code. The playing area between the goal lines is 100 metres by 70, or 7,000 square metres — fractionally smaller than a FIFA pitch, giving 1.43 to the hectare. Add the in-goal areas, which may be up to 22 metres deep at each end, and a maximum-size field reaches 144 metres by 70. That is 10,080 square metres, or 1.008 hectares: no other pitch in any sport lands as close to the unit itself.
Gaelic football uses the largest field of the lot, up to 145 metres by 90. At 13,050 square metres that is 1.3 hectares, so a single pitch needs more than a hectare to sit in. Australian rules is played on an oval, not a rectangle, and the playing surface at the Melbourne Cricket Ground measures roughly 172.9 metres by 147.8. Treated as an ellipse, that is about 2.01 hectares of turf — a little over two hectares for one ground.
How many pitches is a square kilometre?
Pitch counts earn their keep on areas too large to picture directly. The table below runs the conversion in the direction most people need it.

A square kilometre is 140 FIFA pitches. That one figure covers most large-area comparisons in news reporting, where deforestation and development are routinely expressed in pitches per minute or pitches per day. Multiply the hectares by 1.4 and you have the number the journalist used.
- Hectares to FIFA pitches: multiply by 1.4. Ten hectares is 14 pitches.
- FIFA pitches to hectares: multiply by 0.714. Twenty pitches is 14.28 hectares.
- Hectares to US football fields: multiply by 1.87.
- US football fields to hectares: multiply by 0.535.
Why are pitch comparisons misleading?
Pitch counts communicate scale but they mislead about shape, and shape is often the thing that actually matters. A belt of woodland 25 metres across and 400 metres deep is a full hectare, and therefore 1.4 pitches, yet not one pitch would physically fit inside it. Area and usable geometry are separate questions.
They also flatter through rounding. "Twenty football pitches" sounds precise and is not: depending on which permitted size the speaker had in mind, twenty pitches could be anything from 8.1 to 21.6 hectares. That is a factor of nearly three hidden inside a phrase that reads like a measurement.
A football pitch is a picture, not a unit. Use it to convey scale to a reader, never to state an area that anyone will rely on.
The comparison is at its best doing the job it was invented for: giving someone who has stood on a pitch a feel for an otherwise abstract number. Once a figure carries weight — a purchase, a planning application, a grant claim — convert to hectares or acres and state the number plainly.
Working it the other way
Turned around, a FIFA-standard pitch covers 0.714 hectares — 1.76 acres — and an American field with its end zones covers 0.535 hectares, or 1.32 acres. Above that, a square kilometre is 140 pitches, which is the figure most large-area reporting is built on. And when a number has to be right rather than vivid, quote the hectares and leave the pitch out of it.
